Every now and then I will purchase bird seed with whole sunflowers in it. Mostly I just use safflower seed so the squirrels won’t dominate the feeder but I do like to give the birds a variety. When I lived in Hernando Mississippi we didn’t have as many squirrels and so when seed dropped to the ground it germinated and I had beautiful sunflowers surrounding my bird feeders. That brought additional types of birds to our yard.
Here in Fairhope, I’ve tried that a few times but the squirrels are too quick to get the dropped seeds and in the past three years I’ve never had a sunflower.
Friday I purchased some sunflower seeds and I planted them today in small pots placed on my window sill. Hopefully the squirrels won’t get to them. They attack any pots that I leave on the patio table. Took me a couple weeks and about 7 avocados later to finally get a tree started.
Anyway, I’m hopeful that I can grow them to about a foot high in the pots then transplant them around my bird feeders to continue growing. Can’t wait to see them.
