you brought me joy.
I loved to see you climb the wall
of my house when I sat in the yard
Your green would change to keep you safe
you’d climb the bushes and the brick
you’d jump from branch to branch
you’d hang out in my window box
and eat on my mint….how I love it too.
But the sprayers came to keep me safe
of bugs and ants and spiders
that would crawl through cracks and into my house
and scare me as I sat in bed reading
watching something scurry across my blanket.
You were having too much fun, not protecting me from them.
Those days are over and so are your’s
you didn’t hide or stay away.
how could you?
you didn’t know and I couldn’t tell you
but now your brown will not turn green
your skin is spotted white
your eyes are coated over
you cannot see that I care for you still.
I was just having too much fun, not protecting you.
I know you’re supposed to die sometime
I just thought you’d be around for the summer.
will there be more anoles? I dont know
but I’ll miss you and your green and your brown and your bright red throat when you hang out on my brick wall.
oh anole you brought me joy
